Cavendish Beach PEI is a favourite of Islanders and visitors alike. Stretching from the entrance of New London to the picturesque red cliffs at Cavendish East, this 8 mile stretch of natural beach is the focus of Prince Edward Island National Park. Regularly listed as a top-10 beach in Canada, and even one of the World’s 100 best beaches by CNN Travel, Cavendish Beach has been a destination for decades.
Cavendish was made famous through Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel Anne of Green Gables, making the area the Island’s premiere tourist destination just as automobiles were making it easier for visitors to get to Prince Edward Island. The entire beach was incorporated into the PEI National Park in 1937, ensuring that this jewel of a beach would be preserved for future generations. The dune system that hovers over the beach is a fragile area, and the park staff does a good job of protecting the dunes and educating visitors.
The charm of Cavendish Beach has endured through the years as an ideal family destination. When looking for an ocean vacation, it is hard to make a better choice than Cavendish Beach. The small village has grown from its farming roots to provide plenty of services and attractions for visitors, but has still managed to retain the charm of rural PEI. There are lots of campgrounds and cottages, but it has avoided large scale development. What has not changed over the years is the main attraction – the miles of PEI red sand.
The main beach is well serviced by change rooms and other facilities, with swimmers protected by life guards. This part of the beach can get crowded at peak times, but with an 8-mile long beach, there are plenty of opportunities to find more isolated sites, either by walking further than the crowds, or finding a more remote beach access.
Why has Cavendish Beach endured as the best beach on PEI? For the same reason it first rose to fame. It is a unique spot for a family ocean vacation, a place to escape and feel the sand between your toes.
